Liaoning University of Technology (LUT) was authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer master’s degrees in 1993 and began to enroll postgraduate students in 1995. In 2003, the university was entitled to confer Master’s degree of Engineering. In 2005, the name of the Graduate School was finally defined in replacement of Graduate Department. The Graduate School is in charge of recruitment and cultivation of postgraduate students, degree awarding, student’s management and employment under the guidance of Party Committee and administrative departments in LUT. It has six divisions, including Office of Admission, Office of Cultivation, Office of Degrees, Office of Student Affairs (The Youth League Branch Committee), Office of Employment and Office of General Affairs. LUT has been authorized to confer 11 master’s degrees of the first-level disciplines, 43 master’s degrees of the second-level disciplines, among which there are 8 professional degrees, covering Engineering, Science, Laws, Management and Arts etc. Currently, it is home to 1318 postgraduate students, including 1130 full-time postgraduate students, 144 part-time postgraduate students and 44 overseas postgraduate students. It is also equipped with a group of well-trained, incumbent supervisors with a sound structure, among which there are 3 doctoral supervisors and over 300 master’s supervisors. LUT is always committed to improving the quality of postgraduate cultivation and education by conducting various reforms on teaching methods. It was rated as one of the advanced units in terms of the number of master’s degrees and the quality of postgraduate education in Liaoning Province in 2014. In recent five years, LUT has produced 3 high quality postgraduate courses at provincial level, 7 high quality postgraduate courses at school level, and 6 provincial programs on innovation and teaching reform of postgraduate education. It has obtained 3 provincial teaching awards of general higher education, containing 2 first prize and 1 third prize. The Graduate School focuses on innovation and continues to explore models on talents cultivation by combing industry with education as well as science with education. 1 provincial innovation and academic exchange center, 4 provincial bases and more than 60 bases at school level for joint training of postgraduates have been established. Our postgraduates have scored great achievements in innovative competitions, with 53 awards at national level and 230 awards at provincial level won in total. More than 2000 academic thesis are published and over 200 master’s thesis are appraised as excellent thesis in LUT, among which 13 master’s thesis are listed as top 100 thesis in Liaoning Province. The Graduate School keeps expanding its enrollment and improving the quality of postgraduates. Our postgraduates are popular with many enterprises in light of their practical ability on engineering and overall quality. In recent years, more than one hundred postgraduates have been admitted to Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Renmin University of China and Chinese Academy of Sciences for doctoral degrees, with high-quality employment rate of more than 50%. Over the past two decades around, the Graduate School has formed a distinct training system with more reasonable structure, which has provided talent support for the revitalization of the old industrial base in Northeast China and economic and social development in Liaoning Province. Looking into the future, the Graduate School will carry on implementing President Xi Jinping’s instructions on postgraduate education and adhering to the spirit conveyed in the Conference of National Postgraduate Education. With the motto of honing the tools, comprehending the truth and the principle of heading for a practicability-oriented university through first-class postgraduate education, LUT will continue to take fostering virtues through education as its top priority and strives to reform the education and teaching methods of postgraduate students so as to cultivate more talents urgently needed by the country and make more contribution to the national and local economic and social development. |
